Case Study: Decontamination, Removal and Environmental Cleaning

  • Client: Petrochemical Manufacturer
  • Project: Removal of Product from Process Vessels
  • Location: Cheshire

Project Background:

The client had an ammonia distillation vessel that, due to a build up of product inside the chambers, had to be cleaned due to substantial loss in productivity. The vessel was approximately 35 metres high with a 4 metre diameter. The lower part of the vessel (approximately 20 metres high) was the section that needed cleaning and this was made up of 12 chambers with a bell in the middle of each chamber that allowed a liquid flow to the section. The client had trialled various methods of cleaning the vessel including flushing and jetting but was unable to achieve the standard of cleanliness required.

The Solution

Green Contract Services implemented a fully controlled confined space works procedure to allow operatives to enter the vessel wearing direct air fed RPE and chemical proof PPE. Using air-powered CP9 chisels the operatives were able to remove the residual product to a standard above the expectations of the client.

To ensure the overall safety of the operatives involved, monitoring was undertaken of gas, noise and vibration levels produced from the removal works and suitable and sufficient safety precautions were implemented.
